The Gaian are amongst the fewest of all races in New Olympus. It is uncommon to see Gaian around, they are shunned by most races, considered untrustworthy and demented. As New Olympus was forged, Gaia saw it fit that there were protectors of lore, keepers of secrets, and a people faithful to only the true mother of the world. No current race would look after Gaia’s most deeply held secrets like they would, and it was imperative that they were fit for the task. Gaia browsed the nightmares and folklore of the other races, finding what creatures would impose enough fear that other races would shy away from anything her people would protect. Out of the very ground itself was the first of the Gaian formed, out of the fears of an adventuring man who nearly found his death at the claws of a Harpy. Gaia took inspiration from more than dozens creatures of folklore, softening features, sharpening claws, or increasing the intellect so that these creatures of folklore made an impressive collection of races. United under the banner of Gaia’s children, the Olympians advised the other races that these creatures were 'undignified’ ‘unintelligent,’ and ‘thick-headed’ abominations that Gaia had created, seemingly just to spite them. Despite the oppression they faced and discord their presence caused, the Gaian are still faithful, though a few wonder why they couldn't be made as beautiful as the mother they sought to honor.
Advantages
Years of having to defend themselves and their decisions have strengthened their combat skills and mental fortitude. Any skill combat or lore skill not requiring military or formal education does not require a teacher. As a Gaian, the prerequisite for Titan-based Divine spells is already met, and you gain +1 to melee attacks.
Disadvantages
Being among the less common races in New Olympus, Gaian are considered disgusting and repugnant to nearly every other race. This makes it difficult for the Gaian to develop long lasting relationships with other races. Gaian may never take the ‘Well-Connected’ skill, and are harmed by Divine magic (even those that heal others). They may not participate in a Divine ritual, and are immediately delivered into the ‘Spirited’ state after receiving a killing blow with a divine weapon or spell. If a Gaian follows one of the Olympians, they will not be able to use 'Divine Light'.
Makeup & Costuming Requirements:
The Gaian are possibly the heaviest make-up race in The Pantheon. Though many may apply to create a Gaian character, they must show strong, consistent make-up and costuming skills. All Gaian must be modeled after a creature of mythology. Though you may similar traits as a Gorgon or Titan, playing Medusa or any other instantly recognizable creature will result in an automatic denial. We suggest that you come up with an idea, contact staff, and suggest how would you personalize the makeup and costuming to be unique, but share the traits of the creature you want to model. From there, begin your make-up work. Additionally, understand that, apart from days when make-up races are permitted to wear only minimums for the sake of hot weather, you will be expected to replicate your approved make-up and costuming consistently, every event. The advantages and disadvantages for the Gaian are biased to reward you for this extra time and effort, and we only ask that you remain consistent. FX artists, this is your chance to have fun!
Roleplay Suggestions:
The Gaian are rarely seen outside of The Ruins, where they have gathered to protect Gaia's lore. They are not unkind by any means, but will not hesitate to kill if they believe that someone is threatening the sanctity of any of Gaia's secret. Many of these secrets they themselves do not know, but they do know that there are things that New Olympus is not prepared to handle. Gaian have formed a kinship with the Kobaloi, who have seen similar persecution as they have. With Kobaloi being small, skilled mages with a penchant for playful people, they balance the dark, brooding tendencies and skilled melee abilities of the Gaian. It is not uncommon for a Gaian and a Kobaloi to form a long-lasting partnership. The Gaian will seek out any who will be friendly, but are skeptical and quick to assume that they are being judged or treated unfairly. They are not necessarily paranoid, but they are quick to call someone on treating them with anything less than equality, especially humans, who have shown them the most persecution in the past.
