When Artemis was creating her City-state, she intended to rectify a problem that had confounded her when New Olympus was a single continent— her animals. Though beautiful and unique, they were not given equal domain of the world. Some were seen as dumb, others seen as too hostile, and still others as too skittish or lazy to participate in forging a new city-state. She knew her animals were intelligent, but she also knew that verbal communication was a standard amongst those who governed their own city-states. However, having her precious animals suddenly begin speaking common and foreign languages just seemed abusive and disrespectful to her previous creations.
After much contemplation, Artemis determined that she did not need to change the animals she created, but instead that they needed representatives to speak on their behalf. A new race, a group of individuals who were ultimately looking out for the good of the animals of New Olympus, but were respected enough by the other cultures and city-states that they would be listened to and informed when things were happening with New Olympus. While she considered her thoughts, she watched one of her human priests in the field with several animals, they all rested at her feet peacefully, and she would stroke their heads and rub their bellies. She took that priest and met with her, and offered her an incredible prize, in exchange for her life. Artemis took her soul and placed it within the heart of a wolf. She then put that wolf to sleep for a year, restructuring her bones, changing his face, giving her a profound consciousness. When the process was over, Artemis had created a woman named Lya, the first alpha of a new race she would call The Wildern.
Lya would help create a new people from her own flesh and blood. Incredibly vigilant and faithful to her kin, she refused to label them under a single moniker as Artemis did, simply referring to them as ‘my own kind, from my flesh.’ Soon, other races would know them as ‘Lya’s Own Kind’, or simply ‘Lya’s Own’.
Advantages
Lya's Own are strong, sturdy people, and can take a blow better than any other race. When dealt a blow that will deliver one of Lya's own to -1 HP or less by a creature they have already attacked, they may choose to activate 'Feral Rage' for 5 essence. Once activated, the Lya's Own who uses this will not drop to bleed out until the person or creature who delivered that blow has been incapacitated or breaks line of sight for 1 minute. For 10 seconds, any attack that would not ordinarily bring you straight to 'dead' or 'spirited' may be responded with 'no effect', after which time, all attacks will be taken normally. 'Feral Rage' may be canceled by a 'calm mind'. Once 'Feral Rage' resolves, you will drop to 'bleed out' for 30 seconds, and then move into 'dead' a per the rulebook. During Feral Rage, you may not speak in any language other than grunts and growls. Lya's Own may also take the “Well-Connected” skill or “Danger Sense” skill for free. Apothecary skills also do not require a teacher.
Disadvantages
A lifetime spent amongst almost only other Wildern and with very little time spent around other races means that Lya’s Own don’t spend much time in schools or colleges. Engineering, and any skill learned through formal education require two BGAs to learn.
Make-up and costuming Requirements:
Like many other races, the Lya's Own get their clothing styles from the city they were born in and raised in. Most Lya's Own have strong ties to forests, and therefore tend to have simple clothing that can be easily changed. They are not afraid of wearing armor of any kind, but will only wear leather or bone if they can verify with their own eyes that the material was used and prepared in an honorable fashion to the animal that died in its creation. As for makeup requirements, you may only choose a natural wood- or swamp-land creature (please no aquatic animals) and use make-up, prosthetics to represent the animal. You must have a tail, horns or wings if the animal you have chosen has a tail, or horns, or wings. Keep in mind that you must be able to consistently replicate this make-up unless otherwise approved by staff during hot weather.
Roleplay suggestions:
Lya's Own always prefer to be with their own people, or ones they trust. They do best in groups, even if they aren't other Lya's Own. The less of Lya's Own there are together, the more prone to 'fight or flight' they are. This can be reduced in large groups of people, but a single Lya's Own is not a happy Lya's Own. Outside of this, they are friendly, and always willing to have company nearby, or get to know a friendly face. They share food and resources willingly, and have a community-style approach to almost everything to do. The single is willing to die for the group, the group will never leave behind a single.
