City: Sparta
Olympian: Ares
Population: ~600
Races: Humans, Carved, Gaian, Kairos
The City
Sparta is Ares' city, known to train and churn out the biggest, brawniest, most bad-ass warriors that New Olympus can offer. This is the epicenter of New Olympus' military prowess, and Ares has gone to great lengths to ensure that no Gorgon followers, no other nations, and no titans will have their way with New Olympus again. Though there are other places to train, any Hoplite worth his or her shield has spent time in Sparta. Also in Sparta is the largest Colosseum, home of the gladiator battles that draw in crowds from all over the world. Its proximity to Oropos makes this section of Sparta a tourist attraction, including seafarers from other countries who are eager to give their hard-earned drachma to spend a day in the Colosseum. Many of the residents of Sparta are unhappy about this, and there is a heavy push to have the Colosseum moved or rebuilt in another city-state to avoid any risk of military secrets being leaked due to the large amount of foreign visitors.
The People
There are three parts of Sparta: the Colosseum, the residential district, and the military district. While there are some people who live near the Colosseum, the vast majority of people from Sparta are those who live in the barracks-style military housing developments. The residential district is small, and primarily limited to those who only live in Sparta for the sake of proximity to their jobs, and are not part of the militia. If you grew up in Sparta, you are either the son or daughter of a politician, a military leader, or were an orphan from another city-state, now training in Sparta to earn some kind of wage. The culture here is consistent with any military-run state. The rules are very strict, the punishments are severe, and the mercy is thin. Because of this, many followers of Zeus will live here, believing that justice is not a foregone conclusion like some consider it to be in Athens. The people of Sparta are proud of who they are, proud of their advancement as a society, and even more proud of Ares' relentless strife. Though many call them zealots, the Spartans are proud, overcome adversity and adversaries, and aren't afraid to put you in your place with their words, fists, shields or swords.
