The doors to the temple of Poseidon slammed open. Athena marched inside, standing front and center at Poseidon’s throne. The god of the seas stood immediately, looking rather perturbed at Athena’s disturbance.
“What is the meaning of this? Why would you arrive here unannounced and with no herald of any sort beforehand?”
“He took it from me. Zeus is going to rule both Athens and Olympia. He refused to let me have MY city-state!” There was both a sorrow and an anger in Athena’s eyes as she moved toward Poseidon again. “And I have reason to believe you put him up to it.”
As Athena approached, the mortals that were serving at Poseidon’s throne scattered out of the towering goddess' path, clearly afraid that the divine radiance of her presence in such a temperament would have them turned to ash. Poseidon began to descend the staircase that led to his throne as he responded.
“Accusations such as this will grant you no favor in my domain, Athena. My servants are running in fear, and you are causing discord with your anger.” They paused midway on the steps, on a landing that no mortal was allowed past. Within inches of each other, they continued their argument.
“And you are causing discord in your compliance with Zeus’ power-hungry attempts to establish his authority. Athens has been my city for millennia, and I can only assume that you intend to usurp the city from under him and take MY city when he fails!” Athena’s anger could be felt throughout the entirety of the temple, and even mortals outside began to move a distance away.
“I’ll ask you again to cool your temperature, Athena. The days of us fighting over Athens are over. I have my domain here, and Crete still has no patron. Maybe you should consider…”
“I want the city that I raised to greatness! Crete is unprotected, out alone in the sea, days of mortal travel from any assistance should it be attacked. Athens was the most notable city-state in Greece, and now it will fall. Zeus will run that city into the ground with his lack of care and attention. There is already more crime between citizens now than there ever was when I was its patron. And you expect me to believe that you are not involved in…”
“I don’t care what you think I am involved in, Athena, because if it was of your concern I would have brought it to your attention. And if not, then you have no authority to tell me how the matter should be handled. I will NOT have you storming my temple and causing my servants to scurry in fear of incurring your wrath. You will have more respect for me going forward, or there will be repercussions.”
Athena’s face twisted from one of anger to one of sheer shock.
“Are you threatening me, Poseidon?!”
“I am telling you that you will gain no ground with this show of force, and I’m giving you the option to reconsider your actions before I take them personally.”
The goddess’s seething, virulent rage began to smolder, and her proud, strong shoulders sank some. Her face fell, and deepened into sorrow. Poseidon took a step forward, and Athena buried her face into her uncle’s chest.
“I will talk with Zeus, but I offer no promises on the outcome. Until then, show the others that Athens came to power because of your leadership, and that you can do the same with any other city-state. Again, Crete has no Patron at the moment. Seize that opportunity, and I will grant you protection from invaders by sea. That is, assuming you don’t kick down my temple doors again with outbursts like this.”
“I was upset. I’m sorry, Poseidon.” Athena pulled away from Poseidon’s chest, and straightened her robes some. “I didn’t mean to scare your servants away. Shall I collect them for you?”
“No, they’ll return soon enough, and I need to speak with Apollo about Corinth shortly. If you’re feeling calm again, you are welcome to come. He could use your wisdom, certainly. Allowing it to stay frozen over for this long is an abuse of power, and a waste of land.”
“I agree, and I may meet you there. First, I think I might take a walk through Crete and see what it has to offer.”
“Very well. Once I speak with Zeus, I will send a herald.” Poseidon leaned over to kiss her cheek, and she smiled weakly. He then turned to make his way back to his throne, and Athena turned for the temple gates.
“Thank you,” She said as she casually strode toward the doors. “I look forward to more closely working with you.” With that, she left. Just as she passed the gates, a few servants caught a glance of her face, and noticed the quaint smirk growing along her lips.
